Philippe, son of the Frankish trader Roland Arnot, is held back from revenge on the desert bandits -- the Bedaween -- who have looted and destroyed an incoming shipment because Arnot will not pay the traditional tribute. Philippe learns the desert dwellers have justice on their side, loses the family heirloom, a sword from the crusades, and finally, traveling with the caravan, is kidnapped by the Ruwallas, where he sees them fight an enemy tribe with their sacred symbol used in the battle, saves the chief's daughter and escapes back to Damascus, where he finds the Chief's son, and discovers his family's sword is the twin of the Chief's -- and sees his father and the Chief arrive at a friendly pact. Damascus of the 15th century a pivot for world trade and a boy's plausible adventures there.
