This is a collection of nearly thirty letters written by Ebenezer M. Armstrong during the Civil War. Beginning with one letter from his freshman year at what would become the University of Pittsburg, it concentrates on his experiences in the 86th Illinois Infantry Regiment. Most of the letters cover the time spent in the occupation of Nashville, including descriptions of Fort Negley which still stands today. Then the march to the Chattanooga area, and his eye-witness account of the battle of Chickamauga. He gives vivid descriptions of life in the Union Army, including difficulties getting money back home. He discusses the various attitudes toward the war, including those seen today by "strong patriotic supporters" of the war who stay home rather than join the fight.
