Bubion - The Story of an Alpujarran Village

Bubion - The Story of an Alpujarran Village

Michael T. Tracy
0/5 ( ratings)
Between Granada and the Mediterranean lies the Sierra Nevada, and on the southern slopes of that mountain range are the villages of the Alta Alpujarra. Bubión is one of these. The villages and the countryside were shaped centuries ago by Berbers. After the fall of Granada to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, these Moslem people were forced to convert to Catholicism, and after a bitter war in 1568-71 they were driven out; their places were taken by resettlers brought from other parts of Spain. This second edition contains new information on this period. There ensued a long period of poverty and isolation, until in the 20th century roads and other services reached the area. The Civil War of 1936-39 left deep scars. More recently, tourism has developed, bringing greater prosperity but also new problems. The area has been placed under protection to preserve its unique and beautiful features. This book tells the story of the area, centering on Bubión as an example: it explains the origins of the villages and describes local customs, including some which have disappeared and several which are still practiced. It also discusses the impact of tourism on this and other villages of the Alpujarra. The book has 20 colour plates, and numerous colour illustrations accompany the text. The author, Michael Tracy, knows the area well and has a house in Bubión. He has written several other books on historical topics. Reviews of the first edition: "Interesting and compelling read. The beauty in the story is Michael's ability to bring Bubión and its surrounding area to life, transporting the reader into its history and taking them on a journey to the present day. I absolutely loved it and look forward to visiting Bubión when I retire to Spain in a couple of years." "Wonderful source of information and a good travel companion." "Very important for the people of the village..." .
