A Summary of the 1763 Treaty of Paris

A Summary of the 1763 Treaty of Paris

David Long
0/5 ( ratings)
This book provides a summary of the Treaty of Paris , which ended the Seven Years’ War. Each article in the treaty is summarized, and short biographies of the people involved in the treaty are provided.

The Seven Years’ War was an international conflict that pitted Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, and several other European and non-European nations against each other. The North American theater of the Seven Years’ War was known as the French and Indian War. That conflict resulted in the British conquest of French-ruled Canada, which, in turn, helped to set the stage for the American Revolution.

The Treaty of Paris involved the exchange of various territories. Great Britain occupied several enemy colonies during the war. Some of these territories were returned to France and Spain under the 1763 treaty. Others, however, were formally ceded to Britain.

So, for example, Britain returned Manila and Havana , both occupied during the war, to Spain in the treaty. But, in return, Spain ceded Florida to Britain. Likewise, the British returned a French base in Senegal , along with Martinique and Guadeloupe, but held on to Canada, and the French Caribbean island of Grenada.

The treaty was signed on behalf of the kings of Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal. The respective monarchs of these kingdoms at the time were George III, Louis XV, Charles III, and Joseph I.

The treaty was negotiated and signed by 3 representatives of the 3 major powers involved in the treaty- Duke Bedford of Britain, Duc de Praslin of France, and Duke Grimaldi of Spain. John Russell, the 4th Duke of Bedford was a British politician, statesman and diplomat who served in the British Parliament. Cesar Gabriel de Choiseul, duc de Praslin was a French army officer, diplomat and statesman. Jeronimo Grimaldi, 1st Duke of Grimaldi , was an Italian-born Spanish diplomat and politician.
