A crime story on a grand scale, which explores a culture’s fight for survival when it is technically not allowed to defend itself.
In the future the genetic engineering of humans has been permitted, but with a catch; it must be accompanied by strict conditioning that guarantees the safety of natural humans. Inevitably however war breaks out. Civilisation collapses and the Genes have to work out a way of defending themselves that does not break the Law.
On a prison planet after the war is over, an impossibility happens; a series of murders. Have the ghosts of the past infected the catacombs, or is the unthinkable unfolding, the break-down of genetic conditioning? This is the beginning of an odyssey through the future where the ultimate crime triggers the ultimate sanction. But because of programming, it has to be carried out by humanity’s greatest creations, the wielders of the Forfeit. It is a time for seraphs.
