Buy a motorcycle, ship it to the USA and spend three months wandering this vast country. Sounds simple enough.
Starting in Chicago and committed to picking up his partner, Angela, in San Francisco three weeks later, John Ward aimed to take in Route 66, California’s Highway 1, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. From here the ‘plan’ was to visit the Sequoia Park and Yellowstone, before stopping at Sturgis for the 75th anniversary of the world famous motorcycle rally and riding on to the South Dakota Badlands. A ‘quick’ visit to Canada for a martial arts grading test then a 1500 mile ride south to Houston where Angela would fly home. John would then have four weeks to ride north, unsure of his route, spending some time in New England. After a family reunion in New York he would fly home.
John’s estimated that he would cover over 10,000 miles and visit 25 of the 50 US States on his 13-year-old 650 cc Honda, bought sight-unseen over the internet, just two months before leaving the UK.
Ambitious? Considering he hadn’t ridden a motorcycle for over 30 years, and would celebrate his 60th birthday and the third anniversary of his open heart surgery during the journey, perhaps it was.
