I went into reading this with no expectations, and finished absolutely loving it and hoping that the next volume is either already available or soon will be. The artwork - I just love it. I paused multiple times and just looked at the page.
A gripping social justice comic and origin story about Antonio Valor a.k.a. Brotherman and his family. This volume has a tragic cliffhanger, but Valor has my full attention! There definitely a call for more comics (especially comics with an all-POC cast) in which the hero is an ordinary citizen of ordinary means struggling to make a difference in a scary climate. There is some clunky exposition (Leonard Valor's buddy Brick telling Leonard about his gangster days), but it's also a classic origin
I met Dawud and Brian at a convention in Dallas and fell in love with the artwork in this volume and decided to take a chance on their social justice graphic novel. The artwork--an almost psychedelic mix of retro colors and urban graffiti style--is amazing, but the story really moved me as well. This book hearkens back to the social justice roots of comics (http://comicbastards.com/comics/dont-...) and couldn't be more timely with the current rise of Neo-Fascist authoritarianism across the world...
One of my favorite comic books ever. The art, flawless. The writing is flawless. Can't wait to see the next one.
