Yale University

Yale University

Introduction from the Author

Yale University is a brand name that inspires instant recognition, confidence, and esteem. It has power. It can open doors, and it can intimidate outsiders. But, in the end, what does the name really stand for? It stands for the past, for the work its students have put into it, for the fame of its alumni, for its large endowment, and for its history. But, when it comes down to it, you are the present and the future.

Yale offers you a home within an ideal world. Not only do you live in "castles" and are surrounded by culture and diversity, you are told you can be anything and do anything. Yale supports you while you explore many opportunities from the academic to the extracurricular to those of personal growth. If you love to sing, at Yale you can pursue perfection. If you love to read Russian literature, here you can be guided by the best and the brightest minds in the field. If you are a budding artist, you can surround yourself with the work of the masters at any of Yale's art galleries. And if you want, you can do all these things and more.

Meanwhile, you are surrounded by truly remarkable people who just might astound you with their talent. Just walking through the dining halls you can hear conversations about politics, literature, and philosophy. While sitting outside in your residential college courtyard, you might hear a master violinist practicing at her window. While on paper, this might seem intimidating; in reality, it is inspiring and exciting.

Yale offers its students the opportunity to interact with accomplished faculty members, visiting geniuses, and other great students, and thus provides a place for extraordinary personal growth. By participating in new experiences, debating life's great questions, and listening to other people's stories, many students who locate their self-esteem in their resumes come to realize that life is about more than superficial achievement. Because of the great diversity on campus, many students interact with new perspectives, and this exposure breeds tolerance.

Yale University, like any other college, can only be a background for the achievement of its students. Its beautiful gothic buildings and lush, green courtyards are set decorations. Its professors are extras, albeit amazingly brilliant extras. They are there to make you look and be better. Essentially, Yale is a stage, but remember: on this colossal stage, you can be a star.
