Five years ago, Britt Keane's husband Adam was gunned down in an apparently motiveless act. Since then, her life has revolved around her grief and the possibility of changing the past. Happening upon a displaced Russian physicist, she hires him to build a time machine based on his theories. Then she hires Jesse Branson to go back in time with her to take on her husband's killer and save her husband's life.

Unknown to Britt, Jesse's a private investigator. Just before Adam Keane's murder, Jesse was investigating his finances. Britt's quest gives him an opportunity to close the case. But when he hears about Britt's time machine, he's convinced he's in the presence of a madwoman.

Except the time machine works. As Jesse makes test trips back in time with Britt, the puzzle that was Adam Keane comes into clearer focus. At the same time, an unexpected side effect of the machine binds Britt and Jesse together in an emotional intimacy neither of them wants.

Literally feeling Britt's pain, Jesse keeps the truth about Adam from her as long as he can. But the day of reckoning must come. When it does, they must face the ultimate question: can the past really be changed? And if it can, should it be?
