Art Deco (Design Handbooks)

Art Deco (Design Handbooks)

Bevis Hillier
3.4/5 ( ratings)
This was the first book to be published on Art Deco and it did much to popularise that name for the dominant decorative style of the twenties and thirties. It was a pioneering study which set the guidelines for a subject which had never been defined or anatomized. It also inspired the big Deco Revival in the late 1960s and 1970s design and guided collectors such as Andy Warhol and Barbra Streisand in their quest for masterpieces of Deco furniture and objets d'art.
Now reissued in a large format, this lively modern classic treats the subject as both social history and art history, so that a humble chrome ashtray is seen to be as interesting - for what it reveals about inter-war social attitudes - as the superlative furniture of Ruhlmann and the silver of Puiforcat. The book covers silver, jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, metalwork, architecture and the other disciplines which Art Deco revolutioonized.
