A Journey Into Deep Water

A Journey Into Deep Water

Carmen Martin
0/5 ( ratings)
A Journey into Deep Water, a novel by Claudio Anguita, is the story of Matías, an artist that seeks inspiration on a journey to the south of Chile. This trip, however, will bring him much more than he could have ever expected. He will experience first hand the hard life of Amargo’s artisanal fisherman on their struggle for survival against the economic threat of transnational companies, whose constant abuses towards independent workers force them to risk their lives on a daily basis. Matías will take part in some of these expeditions, getting involved with them first as an artist interested in taking pictures of what he sees and thinking of it as material for future paintings. Later almost becoming a fisherman himself, fighting for his life in the middle of a storm. He will also learn about friendship, loyalty and community work. By a bonfire, Matías will be part of a totally new reality: that of the “thought man,” that after a day of hard work, slows down to share a glass of wine, a cigarette, a comrade conversation. And most importantly: he will learn about the love between Guillermo, one of the fishermen, and Isabel, a married woman who lives a miserable existence alongside her husband Bernardo, a violent and alcoholic old man who abuses her in every possible way. Guillermo and Isabel will fall in love and the consequences of their passion will change their lives forever as they discover together the endless possibilities of love and freedom which were right in front of their eyes, waiting to be revealed. Matías was witness of that. As a picture where light and darkness melt into each other, A Journey into Deep Water is a novel that blends hope
and despair. It is an invitation to the reader to look further and deeper and to see that there is always a chance to start over, and that nothing can keep us from interpreting our lives just as we want them to be.
