It is with a feeling of great privilege, and not a little apprehension, that I present to you this first edition of New Daylight with me as its editor. I am aware that I am following in the footsteps of some inspirational and creative writers and editors, so, as only the fourth person to undertake this role, I will do my best to live up to their example.
In this early part of the year, we follow the church in its regular pattern of penitence and celebration. The last few days of Christmas take us into the New Year with a look at times of feasting as they are shown in the Old Testament - both the uses and abuses of grand occasions, with fine food as well as ordinary meals that become celebrations as a result of the attitude towards the occasion of those who are present. These thoughts find their counterbalance in some reflections on times of famine, which were an ever-present threat in those times, and we find much to ponder in the management of such situations by some of our best-known Old Testament figures. As we move into the still times of Lent, David Winter invites us to understand and appreciate silence, while, later, the drama and action of Jesus' Easter journey is shown to us through the eyes of Luke by Andy John. The time of celebration and resurrection joy that is the post-Easter season is mingled, for contemporary Christians, with the daunting realisation that we are now Christ's body on earth and we too must play our part in bringing nearer the kingdom of heaven. We are helped in this by the wisdom and love of Paul's letters to the Thessalonians, brought to life by Tony Horsfall. So it is that we are supported by the insights and knowledge of the New Daylight contributors as we continue our earthly journey together in the footsteps of Christ. I am very proud to be able to contribute to the continuation of this special publication and hope that you will gain as much as I have from this edition.
