In a small Tennessee town, at the height of the Great Depression, a madman, who the papers are calling the Scarecrow, is hunting children. Sheriff John Grant, realizing that he is in over his head, calls upon the help of a friend from his days as a Chicago street cop. Dr. Benjamin aBonesa Dyer is an old black man who in his youth had a powerful gift. He was able to see the dead. In his old age, his gift has faded and nearly disappeared, but as he travels south to help his friend, his gift is returning. Just as Benjamin arrives, two more girls are taken and Benjamin begins to see the spirits of the Scarecrowas victims, even as their decapitated bodies are being left at crossroads and sitting in orchards.
