When Conrad Chen enlists his friend, Eilish Bourke, to help him solve a mysterious online puzzle that offers a prize that ‘will change the world’, she thinks it’s all a wild goose chase, a scam looking for gullible kids. The Pythagoras Puzzle? Eilish doesn’t know the first thing about mathematics. She’s a word geek.

But when the pair’s former computer science teacher goes missing and his son, a young I.T. genius from Brooklyn, arrives in their small town to offer his services to help them solve the puzzle, Eilish decides that there is more to this game than meets the eye.

On the other side of the world, in seedy East London, two teenage punk rockers are also vying for the elusive prize. Yolande Grigarova, a virtuoso violinist and her boyfriend, Thomas Knox, are sure they have the skills to solve the puzzle.

The quest takes these young people on a thrilling race through the winding streets of southern Italy, through Europe and Britain and finally to a remote island in the Outer Hebrides where the winning team comes face to face with ‘Pythagoras’ an eccentric Scotsman with a penchant for cosmology and physics who holds a secret that might indeed change the world.
