I liked this book but there is an editing mistake. It says "the monsters slowly DISBURSE until we are the only ones left in our parade". Disburse means pay out (from a fund). Disperse means distribute or spread over a wide area. Given the context it would appear disperse is what was meant.
This was a cute book for Halloween. It's told from the dog's POV. He is told a scary Halloween story so he is frightened all the way through Halloween night. It's a cute spooky story for kids. Not too scary, but fun for those that like the spookier side of Halloween. I liked when Enzo thought he actually transformed into a fire breathing dragon.It's a bit of a long book for bedtime for a two year old, but my daughter enjoyed it and stayed entertained. I'd re-read this book again with her at Hall...
Got to meet Garth Stein tonight at an author event and got this book for my sister who is due in a few weeks. It's such a sweet story and if you loved The Art of Racing in the Rain by him, this is such a cute extension of that story. Hope to read more of his books about Enzo! Love that they even kept Denny and Zoe in the story!

This was a super cute dog's-eye-view of Halloween for a first-timer - and will probably be a big hit with parents who may not have done dress-up with Very Small Ones before.Poor Enzo, and his panic over the kiddos playing along - it gives an extra "scary" element to an event that lots of kids might not realize is still scary to others.
I honestly don't recall if I've ever read an Enzo picture book before! Very Scary Halloween was longer than I expected for a picture book, but it was so cute. I really enjoyed how it had both a Halloween loving side and a scared side for children who may fall under each category. I'm glad to see a picture book that reflects that to teach kids that Halloween is all about fun :)
