Wit and Wisdom for My Mother (Wit and Wisdom Minibooks) (Giftlines: Wit & Wisdom)

Wit and Wisdom for My Mother (Wit and Wisdom Minibooks) (Giftlines: Wit & Wisdom)

Mike Yaconelli
0/5 ( ratings)
Some mothers' treasuries attempt to encompass all age groups and satisfy everyone from new mothers to grandmothers. Not so with Wit and Wisdom for my Mother, which is written for and dedicated to the author's mother. This gives the book a more personal, intimate touch that manages at the same time not to be exclusive. The result is an engaging, occasionally irreverent insight into a relationship from a son's perspective. Such questions as "Does it give you satisfaction to realise how much you were right and I was wrong when I was an adolescent?" or statements such as, "I've never told you this before but I can see why Dad fell in love with you," may not be every child's method of connecting to his or her parent, but on the whole the author successfully manages to mix the mundane with heartfelt openness. The humour grows as the history of this family is "Because you have never stopped giving me advice, I understand why it was important to move away." Other, unconnected quotes add to the general mix of "wit and wisdom", but some of the most revealing sentences touch on marital relations, which children seem to innately sense. Dads don't get off lightly either. This book is a godsend for that growing breed of "new men" who don't quite yet have the courage to put into words just how they really love their mum; girls, on the other hand, will probably have resolved such issues long ago and may find this an amusing talking point to chat and laugh about with their mother. --Susannah Steel
