Jean-Paul has always been the type of guy who gets teased by "tough guys"(he's always been skinny, gangly, has a large nose and wears super thick glasses). It doesn't help that his mother has always been overbearing - more so since the death of his father, when she and Jean-Paul took over the family's toy company. But one day, after one too many people ask way too much of him, Jean-Paul takes off without telling anyone, booking himself on a cruise for singles. There he meets a colorful cast of c...
Very French, fairly depressing and a bit... weird. Not entirely my cup of tea, to be honest.I received a copy through Netgalley.
Good story 😊👍🏻. And nice illustrations.
2/5 starsJean-Paul is a single, somewhat lonely and very shy middle-aged man. He has a demanding mother and dreams somewhere. He dreams about love and that one blonde women he sees on his jog now and then. The man does not seem to be very happy, but Jean-Paul enjoys his normal, simple and quiet life, more or less. But sometimes, even a quiet life is not enough, and so Jean-Paul embarks on an adventure on a cruise ship for lonely hearts. This is the general premise of the graphic novel and that i...
Jean-Marc has a comfortable job at his family’s toy company and an active social life with friends - except he’s horribly bored. His mother is overbearing, he doesn’t really enjoy playing football with his buddies, and he couldn’t care less about his work. Jean-Marc is lonely for a female partner, stuck in a rut and needs to escape. So he jumps onto a singles cruise and his adventure towards a new life begins… I really enjoyed Cyril Pedrosa’s Hearts at Sea. I’m sure more than a few people can re...
A graphic novel about a middle aged man chained by his supposed asexuality and his oppresive and controlling mother. At some point he can't stand it anymore and embarks on a "lonely hearts" cruise to find a mate, escaping his up till then uncolorful and boring routine. It surely has it's moments, but, being a romantic drama it's a take it or leave it kinda comic. I loved pedrosa's "three shadows" and I was really excited to read "Hearts at Sea". It lacked the same spark though. It didn't disappoi...
A lighter narrative that some of his later comics. In this one, the art is more conventional and clean -- especially when compared to Portugal, Three Shadows, and the most recent Equinoxes -- and it displays that side of Pedrosa that worked on Disney films. More novella-like than novelistic.
Pedrosa's Hearts at Sea is sad, melancholic and very lively in many ways. The story is about Jean-Paul who's a stranger in his own life, always the great person and nice. In reality no one knows him and he's like a shadow trapped. His mother owns his life treating him like a kid even when he's a man already. Jean-Paul flees to a single's cruise ship only to be alone once again, but the trip teaches him things about himself and strengthens his desire to leave everything behind. For me the story s...
'Hearts at Sea' by Cyril Pedrosa is a French graphic novel about a lonely man who seems to have everything, but love. Jean-Paul seems to work hard. He has a really overbearing mother and a lot of demands to do things that he doesn't really enjoy. To that end, he just disappears one day and ends up on a Lonely Hearts cruise. His experiences with the various characters he meets on the ship vary from charming to downright creepy. The art is cool. The humor may just be too European for me. The story
It's an interesting read, though it left me without any impression after I finished it.The reason is that it is suppose to be a story of someone trying to get away from his life, his mother particularly. However we are given a way to long intro, that doesn't quite well capture the impression it the topic. The follow shows just to be rushed way the end. However I did like the main character and the story in general. And for the art it fits the story well, good coloring, but it seems Pedro's a does...
One easy way to get graphic novels rated for you is to find out how quickly and urgently they were translated into English. This was ten years in the making, so to speak, and that says a lot. A hum-drum chap goes off with a party of singles on a cruise, instead of kowtowing to his sad and slightly bitter mother, or thinking about work. And… not a heck of a lot happens – this isn't a world where happiness is just around the corner, as you'd gather immediately from the unattractive artwork. So-so,...
Hearts at Sea by Cyril Pedrosa is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in late September.Originally published in 2016 in French, it's about a writer, Jean-Paul, living in a polar town with a hot imagination….and his elderly mom. For a change of scenery, he goes alone on a Mediterranean cruise. He looks a lot like a 40 year-old version of the guy from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, but with the fantasies of a Richard Sherman from Seven Year Itch on acid.
This was an interesting graphic novel. I didn't completely love the art style but i think it worked well when telling the story. The story focused on Jean-Paul and the way he was written meant he was a relatable character. The colour scheme was an interesting choice and at times it worked but other times, it seemed to hinder the story.I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I have a really big problem with how some graphic novel illustrators portray women: so alike that I can’t tell them apart, which seriously hinders my enjoyment and/or understanding of the plot. This was the case here. Even though the story line was interesting, I was very soon overwhelmed with the Mother and women who looked like her, as well as all the blonde women who became a blur.
Amusing, heartfelt, great artJean-Paul was a great character
