As well versed as I consider myself to be with both the Alien and Mignola universes, I (admittedly) was caught flat-footed by this one. I didn’t have to roll a D6 to catch my breath but, I did heave a sigh of ecstasy when I noticed that Dave Gibbons (of Watchmen fame) was up on this track too. Dave Gibbons and Mike Mignola – on the same comic?! I prayed my beating heart to still and began my read with rapt attention.Three words sum it up: Cool as Shit!My initial surprise was unflagged throughout...
A mad captain and a crewman abandon Nova Maru when something goes wrong with the cargo. They crash land on a remote planet, but are they really alone? This graphic novels is short, but intensive. The story is dark and gritty, but it suited the story very well. As a fan of the Alien movies is it always interesting to see if you can get the same feeling of dread of reading about Aliens as you get when you see the movies. And, no it’s not the same thing, but still there is just something uneasy to s...
Bullet Review:The art is absolutely fantastic. The story is interesting too - creepy and pulse pounding. It's also a good one for people like me who have only ever seen the first movie and know next to nothing about the franchise.
Mike Mignola and Aliens? Hell yes! Mike Mignola is one of my all time favorite artists and his art here is brilliant. There isn't much to the story, but the art alone makes this well worth the buy. Plus it's a super short read
A pretty solid tale of a man who used his religion to survive the horrors of the aliens. Some neat twist and good art but overall too short to make a impact.
Mignola art on an Aliens story? SOLD. It helps that the story's pretty all right, too.
Tight story from Gibbons and nice art from Mignola.
Stays true to the original.
Aliens: Salvation.Dave Gibbons + Mike Mignola + Kevin Knowlan.Selkirk, a God-fearing crewman aboard the space freighter Nova Maru, is forced at gunpoint to abandon ship with his captain. They crash-land on a small planet, but it is soon apparent that they have not entirely escaped. Marooned on an off-the-path planet, the two soon discover that they have not been left alone and must now contend with the Nova Maru's deadly cargo Excellent premise, briniging religion into the Aliens franchise. As i...
Mignola's famous drawing style gives the alien franchise a whole new spin. Combined with Kevin Nowlan's inks and Matt Hollingsworth's colours it creates a different kind of creep - the creepy we know and love from Hellboy. But here, there's no witty remarks, just desperation and gore. The religious theme might not be everyone's cup of tea. I read it more as a critique on the false promise of salvation by belief, especially with the last page. Fans of alien and/or mignola: this is a must read!
The story is pretty meh, Dave Gibbons has written a pretty standard Alien story and added a bit of religion in to the mix, which didn't quick work as well as I hoped it would have. The saving grace to this is Mike Mignola's artwork, which is beautifully dark and effective as ever and if I'm to be honest the main reason I picked this book up!
A decent entry into the Aliens Franchise of books/graphic novels/movies. Will it ever end?
Short comic with great art work by Mignola. Could have been fleshed out a little as not much happens, but as mentioned, the art and colours are good.
This was a very well scripted, self-contained, Aliens adventure from a killer creative team.
Not a mashup of characters, but certainly one of style and substance. A masterpiece in either case.
Plot: 3* - Art 5*Plot: a pious dope gets stranded on a remote planet after his ship crashed. Imploring the Lord for the whole book he will learn Satan has a name: the Company. On this rather tedious premise Gibbons develops a 50/50 plot. Kind of boring and preachifying on one hand-not too original either- with intense and gory scenes of action on the other.Art: Mignola and Nowlan. Do I really need to say more?Ok. Mignola-wonderfully inked by Nowlan- does what he does best: slick pencils, massive
This was amazingly made aesthetically (but it's made by Mike Mignola so I didn't expect less), but I just don't particularly feel much for the ALIENS franchise (I did like Prometheus tho), so it didn't really excite me as much as f.i. Hellboy. Plus, I like the setting in Hellboy more than here. I love SF, but I guess it isn't what Mike Mignola is best at (it still is amazing tho, but he's just better at other things).
I loved the artwork and the mental mania. The story felt a little too short and I think it might have had more tension if it were told in the present tense, rather than basically a long monologue. Also, half the twists weren't very surprising.
Fast paced graphic novel which follows a pious man named Selkirk. It is told in his monologues where he is often in conversation with his infinite God. I read it in two half hour sittings. Various plot-lines are similar with the Alien movie - such as a company spaceship on a covert mission, crew members who look human but are actually synthetic and of course the carnage by the Alien creatures. The writing is not bad, and the images are fantastic. I was tempted to give it a 5 star but settled for...
Ok, I'll be honest. I only picked this up because of Mike Mignola. I'll read anything with his name slapped on it. That being said, for me that's the only thing that saved this title. The story was forgettable and a rehash of what we've heard before: there's a crew put in distress on purpose by the evil COMPANY. Anyone who has read Mignola's other titles will recognize familiar character designs. One character looks like of a clone of Rasputin. It's a very quick read. If you're an avid fan Migno...
