Gobseck / Jesus-Christ En Flandre

Gobseck / Jesus-Christ En Flandre

Honoré de Balzac
0/5 ( ratings)
Excerpt from Gobseck Et Jesus-Christ En Flandre
Gobseck and Jesus-Christ en Flandre, here reprinted precisely as they stand in the Michel Levy and Calmann-Levy text, are linguistically and otherwise well suited to students who have been carefully trained in simpler French during one year, at least, in preparatory schools or in colleges where the standard for modern languages is not lower than that required for Latin and Greek. The aim of the two commentaries is, first, to save both teachers and students the many hours of research necessary to understand Balzac's many allusions, as well as other matters of a non-linguistic character which are by no means self-evident; and, secondly, to explain the many difficulties of a purely linguistic sort which each text presents. These difficulties are sometimes obvious; sometimes, however, they are of the kind that may easily be passed over unnoticed by persons not trained by a long experience in teaching to suspect first impressions and to be always alert for those nicely hidden traps which lie along the path of every learner of a foreign language. French is not less difficult than Latin, but it is difficult in a different way.
