Melissa's life since she left the orphanage at eighteen and went to university to study Spanish, French and Law has taken her on a journey that changed her life for ever. Having no known living relatives she is very much alone with no family but a wealth of friends.
On second year placement she is with a wealthy Spanish family in Madrid to help improve her Spanish as she will specialise in European Law. Despite her first opinion of the eldest son, who is head of the family banking corporation, Miguel, she falls for him during a secret weekend at the family villa in Marbella, swimming sailing and an evening at a local Feria.
His duplicitous Mother senses something going on and sets out on a course of manipulation and manoeuvring to put an end o it. She weaves a web of deceit to get rid of this 'English Gold Digger'.
Melissa , broken hearted by the turn of events flees back to England without speaking to the unsuspecting Miguel.
They are not in touch, each blaming the other. However, it's hard to avoid seeing each other from time to time in magazines and newspapers and they can't help but think 'What If'?
After gaining her degree she works for a London Law firm which sets her on another journey from London to Nottingham to Madrid again seven years later and meets up with Miguel again.
Neither broach the subject of the past. It's not until she goes with him to Argentina as Corporate Lawyer managing merger contracts there for his bank that they eventually stumble across the truth. They discover the treachery that had taken place in Marbella.
In the intervening years neither Melissa or Miguel have had a serious relationship.
The final piece of the puzzle falls into place in Argentina and Melissa uncovers a clue that at last identifies her father.
