World War II seems real for two boys, Danny 8 and Teddy 7, who play war in the deep woods across the street from their houses in Raleigh, N.C. In 1946, Danny’s father Daniel, a former Navy pilot, gives him a copy of How to Survive on Land and Sea, the standard manual issued to all Navy pilots. The boys decide to spend a week in the woods pretending to be downed pilots, practicing the book‘s survival techniques and what they know from their own adventures in the forest. Unfortunately they don’t bother to tell anyone, and their parents and the police begin a desperate search. The boys confuse the reality of their pursuers with the fantasy of their Japanese enemies. Then they find a machine gun….
