3/23/2018 ~~ LOVE! Definitely a case of don't judge a book by it's cover. When I first looked at this book, I passed it over - thinking it would be an issues book about finding a job during the Great Depression. Instead, it's about a dog looking for a home. He shows perseverance and creative thinking as he attempts to convince a farmer that he would be a valuable asset to the farm. If you need a heart-warming smile, read this.
Look at the pictures on these pages. Where do you think this story takes place? That's right, on a farm! What usually happens on a farm? What might you see there? Think about what a dog might do at a farm. As I read, think about whether a dog could be useful on a farm or not.Opening moves used:-Draw attention to the setting-Raise questions in the readers' minds
Original, heart-warming story with quite lovely, gentle and unique illustrations. A wonderful read-aloud.
“Hello all of my wonderful students. Today we are going to be reading a very exciting story about a dog on a farm. How many of you guys know what a farm is? Can anyone tell me what kind of animals live on the farm? There are cows, chickens, and horses. There also is a very special person that lives on the farm that takes care of all of the animals. That person is called a farmer. Now in our story today, there is a very special animal that typically we don’t see on many farms. We have a dog in o
BIAS WARNING! Yes, I am the author of this book, and I love it. This is the story of an out-of-work farm dog trying to find a new situation. The farmer is not convinced that he needs a dog, but the canine is persistent and eventually proves his worth. First, let me say that Chris Sheban's soft, muted illustrations that have sharp foregrounds, then fade away into the distance, are delightful. The small humorous details and heart-touching expressions are priceless. He's amazing. As for the story,
I think in reading this book with children I would, Activate background knowledge, by asking What animals are on a farm and what do they do? Or invite them to make personal connections by asking, "How many of you live on a farm? And, do any of you have a dog? What does he do on the farm? What is his job?
I am a sucker for a dog book.
Here's a really cute picture book about a determined dog and his attempts to find his place in the world. When he stumbles across a farmer, he offers his services. But the farmer thinks a dog is a useless creature, and says he has no work available. So the dog asks if the farmer's in need of a cow. The farmer says he is, but that the dog is not a cow. The dog says, "We'll see about that." And the next day, the dog helps the farmer get the milking done in jig time. The story continues in this vein...
1) Lay groundwork for children so they can understand the theme- "I'd like you to think of something you wanted really badly. How did you go about getting it?" (wait for responses) "What did you do if someone told you 'no'? Did you stop trying? How many times did you try before you quit?" (Wait for responses). "We are going to be reading the story 'Job Wanted', where a dog really wants a job to do on a farm."2) Activate background knowledge- "As you can guess, this story takes place on a farm, w...
“Raise your hand if you have been to a farm.”“What animals have you seen on a farm? And what kind of jobs they did on the farm? Now turn and talk with your partner.” Have students discuss with each other and share out their responses. “Great! There are lots of animals and lots of work to do.”“Today, we are going to read the book Job Wanted. This book talks about an old farm dog who wants to look for a job and a home on the farm. So, what a dog can do on a farm? Let’s explore the story, and find
Opening Move: Prompt predictions based on titleI would use this move by showing the students the front and back cover and would read them the title. I would then ask them what they predict the story will be about. I could then lead into the story by saying, "Let's find out if your predictions are right!"Opening Move: Draw attention to the settingThis would be a great move to use to bring up types of animals and their jobs on a farm. Some students may not have ever been to a real farm so explaini...
I recommend this one for all ages. The persistence of the dog, trying to convince the farmer that he could contribute to the farm and should stay is priceless. Readers will love how the dog tries to act like a cow, a horse and a chicken so the farmer would see he was worth keeping on the farm. Teresa's wonderful use of language made the story fun and interesting. The beautiful illustrations highlighted the characters personalities and gave a golden glow to the setting. I read this story to my stu...
Super cute story about a homeless dog looking for a home and a place to be useful. The farmer isn't so sure, but the dog never gives up - first he helps with the cows, and moos, then the horse, and he neighs, then the chickens ... Finally, the farmer is won over! Another happy rescue dog!
This may be my favorite book I read in the library all year long. That's five different books a week times 34 read aloud weeks. That's a whole lot of really great books I've been sharing. And, this one might be my favorite. It's fun and sweet and a wonderful vehicle for conversation. We talked about perseverance, work ethic, doing more than you get paid for, the difference between being disappointed and discouraged. This is a wonderful book! Read it!Classroom ConnectionsCharacter Chats - perseve...
What a great story! You never know when you may need something (or something) that you didn't think you did!
I will start out by showing the students the cover and read them the title. I will ask them, "What do you predict is going to happen"? I will allow for the students to respond. Next, I will ask if they have ever been on a farm and what type of animals are on a farm". After the students respond with the list of animals I will ask one final question. "What does a farmer do all day"? After predictions are made by the students, we will begin reading the book.-Invites for predictions based on the tit...
Summary: This is the story of a hungry dog who comes upon a farm that he'd like to live on. He asks the farmer if he could use a dog but the farmer says he has no use for a dog. The dog proceeds to ask if the farmer has a job opening for a cow which the farmer is confused by but responds that he does have an opening. The next morning, the dog is there to work as a cow and even though he is helpful to the farmer, he still isn't accepted. For the next couple of mornings, the farmer awakes to find

I learned of this book at the Norwich Bookstore's Educator's Reception this week. It was a delightful get together with book recommendations, free ARCS and discounts on our purchases for schools. So...seeing, I had a discount, I just had to buy some books, and this was one of the books recommended. Job Wanted is a delightful picture book of tenacity.
