Mudlark and Onions is the second book in the Inspector Makepeace series. He is a man with a colourful past but he is, at the core, a good and honest Copper. His personal life is also settling down but management strive to keep him from working with Pat Thrimble who is both his new soul-mate and also a colleague. Fate however throws them together again in this story which is not so much a whodunit as "how can they be caught"?
The story is fast paced, comedic in parts and also dark. Makey is given the job of bringing a crime family down but personal tragedy and the reluctant need to put Thrimble in danger conspire against him. The story has the usual cast of bizarre characters from a perverted priest to a love-struck Police-Woman but is set against a 100% accurate depiction of policing methods in the UK during the 1970's. Makey has his faults and also owns a dog with a most unfortunate name.
Stuart, the author, witnessed the times he writes about and depicts the attitudes and methods prevailing in that era.
