So far only read:Maiden, Mother, Crone by Ann Leckie & Rachel Swirsky - 3*This could be a chapter in a full novel. We get a peek about her past, we see her present and know where she is headed.I listened to the PodCastle version narrated by Wilson Fowlie
Favourites: Goss, Nagamatsu, de Bodard.
Beautiful Boys - 3 starsScientist is convinced that very beautiful men are aliens that came to Earth to continue their race. The story is a mix between her personal interactions with the men and her own research. I liked the ideas, as it represents for young women how elusive some men are. It would be nice if there was any explanation for those rugged, wandering men who are untameable! He Came From a Place of Openness and Truth - 3 starsA high school boy dates another boy he meets at his part tim...
Headwater LLC was a really great story, but sadly that sort of thing has become the exception rather than the rule for this publication which seems to concern itself more with the identity politics of its authors these days than the quality of stories.A shame. For a while, Lightspeed was really good.
Note: I only read Headwater LLC.Originally posted at: http://thebookplank.blogspot.com/2015...I have recently found out that there are several well reputed Science Fiction and Fantasy magazines out there that offer a great wealth of short fiction. Lightspeeds Magazine is just one of those magazines, I read a anthology by John Joseph Adams last year, Dead Man's Hand, that blew me away, I got the same feeling of some of the stories that I read in this magazine so far! The story of Headwater LLC pi...
Thought lots in here was fairly good but unexceptional, save for Headwaters LLC, which is a fantastic tale about the exploitation of the value in a rare resource, in this case something mythological and sentient.
It's always a pleasure to read (and listen to) stories written by Anne Leckie. And this was no disappointment. I listened to audition edition thanks to PodCastle (Episode 500, 12/11/2017) here: http://podcastle.org/2017/12/11/podca...This story was originally published in this edition of Lightspeed Magazine in January 2015; text found here: http://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fic...
Quick Sips - Lightspeed #56Today I'm looking at Lightspeed #56. Four new stories, two of them science fiction and two of them fantasy. The science fiction are both near-future (nearly present, in fact), and the fantasies range from contemporary fantasy to sci-fantasy. An interesting mix. So onward!Stories:"Headwater LLC" by Sequoia Nagamatsu (3431 words)This was my favorite story in the issue. About a woman, Yoko, who inadvertently betrayed her friend, Masa, a Kappa, so that now he and all the K...
This is my first time reading Lightspeed magazine and this issue was just okay. While a few of the stories were very well done and made great use of the science fiction or fantasy theme others didn't go far enough or focused too much or romance and or didn't focus enough attention on the genre elements that were in their short stories. The novella and novel excerpts were very interesting and I must say that if this issue is anything to go by the Lightspeed certainly packs a lot into a reasonably
I've been reading Lightspeed for more than a year. I appreciate the mix of new and re-prints but this one feels "light" in some way that I haven't yet been able to articulate. I enjoyed "Beautiful Boys" (Theodora Goss) when I read it in Asimov's, but it didn't hold up that well on re-read. Maybe it was too recent a reprint?Fantasy is not my favorite genre, and this month's issue left me cold, there.
Beautiful Boys by Goss. This sent chills of awe though me. Wow!
Fun story about a socialogical study of physically attractive young men.
