When artist Jean "Moebius" Giraud and author Jean Michel Charlier were unable to continue their popular Western series Blueberry due to a legal problem, they began a new story with a new character.

Reminiscent of Gone with the Wind, Mississippi River introduces us to rascally soldier Cutlass, embroiled in a series of unfortunate adventures similar to Blueberry's, but less heroic. The story was serialized in the French magazine Metal Hurlant in 1979, and translated and released by Marvel's Epic imprint in 1990.
