3 1/2 stars. What a sad story. And parts were too unbelievable. But man, can Butler make you feel things, even in just 40 pages.
That was super hard to read because of the subject matter, but as ever, Butler's prose was subtle and haunting.
Read this as part of Butler's collection, Beneath the Bonfire. This appears to be available as a standalone e-story, and it is definitely one of the most haunting of the collection. Get it.
This short story by Nickolas Butler makes you feel things. It is sad, brutal, powerful, and haunting.Oh, and I could see this as a pre/se/anyquel to a larger scheme.
Nickolas Butler's "Shotgun Lovesongs" was my top pick for best book of 2014. I was very happy to see he had another offering, and promptly downloaded it. I didn't realize it was a short story and not a full-length novel, but that was my fault for not carefully reading the description. No matter; I certainly don't regret downloading it.It was a great story, but I would have loved for it to have been longer and more fleshed out. I really was interested in the backstories of the main characters, esp...
This is one of the most powerful books I've ever read, and I read a lot. I'll be anxiously waiting for his next full-length novel, and pray that it will measure well against Shotgun Lovesongs!Carol in San Antonio
Sad that it was a short story.. I wanted more!
Darker and more harrowing than Shotgun Lovesongs but still feels familiar. Not amazing, but very good.
Tough subject matter but another excellent tale from this author. Brutal and horrifying. I couldn't read it fast enough.
So dark, so Mr. Butler's haunting way with words...
This is a short story from his collection "Beneath the Bonfire". I'm not a big short story fan but I've read on of his novels and have others on my shelf and so far have been quite happy with his writing so when this one story was available on Kindle for free decided to try it. Glad I did, it was good enough that I will probably get the book that contains all the stories. I heard this one was the best but we'll see.
Well-written short story. The subject-matter was a little too brutal for me to say I enjoyed it, but I do appreciate Butler's talent.
I enjoyed the characters, and their world and hope I get the chance to read the story again and/or to read more within the series. My Rating System:* couldn't finish, ** wouldn't recommend, *** would recommend, **** would read again, ***** have read again.
