The book describes the journey of Norman, Eugene and later his first wife Ernestina in 1933, travelling through Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Norman and Eugene first go through France, initially envisaged by canoe, and then cross into San Sebastián, after which they head on to Pamplona, Zaragoza, Madrid, Toledo, Salamanca, Porto, Lisbon, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Huelva, Sevilla, Algeciras, Casablanca, Marrakech and back to Casablanca.
