When a messenger pigeon arrives at the Landers' farm, carrying a life changing message, the community of Earthaven is catapulted into action and emotional turmoil. Council and public meetings are arranged to discuss its contents, and to prepare the people for the commissioning of their Blessed Children; those seven year olds set aside at birth for the service of Quaidran - their god - to help reverse the increasing corruption in the world. The forest dwelling Arborites - the tree people - come to their aid, and their wounded receive healing ministrations from Lidy. New respect grows for her, and she is named "Bridgemaker".

'The commissioning' is the first in a series of books called 'The Children of Quaidran', and is suitable for all ages. At the book's core is relational values such as fairness, justice, loyalty and love, family and community, and the belief that good can overcome evil, no matter the odds.
