The Last Mission

The Last Mission

Don Bishop
3/5 ( ratings)
Don Bishop digs into the memories of his time in the US Army Special Forces in the 1960s to conceive The Last Mission which delves into the dark world of clandestine special operations during the peak of the Cold War.

The Vietnam War was over but the world is still a mean place. A Socialist/Communist government has come to power in Colombia and the Soviets were providing as much aid as possible. In Chile the Socialist president is losing his grip on the country and talk of a military coup was in the air. The Soviets want to prop up the Chilean president and move in so they can control both sides of the Panama Canal and the sea passage around Cape Horn placing them in total control of sea traffic in the western world. The Soviets mobilize a naval task force to go to Chile before the coup begins but an explosion at the refinery in Vladivostok, Siberia cuts off the oil supply for the fleet. They will need to refuel enroute with oil from a refinery under construction in Buenaventura, Colombia.

The United States hatches a plan to quickly insert a small team of US Army Special Forces into Colombia using high altitude, or HALO, parachuting. This group would cut the supply of oil to the refinery at Buenaventura.

Sergeant Mike Hays, a Green Beret veteran of five combat tours of Vietnam and numerous clandestine missions, is picked to lead the team. He expresses doubts such a complex operation can be executed with only a few days training.

As soon as the team is inserted, Captain Daniel Cortez of the Colombian army picks up their trail purely by chance. In the days that follow, a Soviet advisor, the Special Forces team and the Colombian military are locked in a battle of attrition and survival through the jungles of central Colombia.
