Nicholas has also worked for Private Eye , when he was jointly responsible with Barry Humphries for the Barry Mackenize strip cartoon. He was born in London in 1935 and studied at the Slade School of Art. After graduating, he worked as a theatre director and stage manager, but he gave that up to earn his living as an artist. As well as being a cartoonist, Garland is an accomplished painter and woodcut artist, whose work has been exhibited widely. He has also illustrated a number of books, most recently his son Alex's novel, Coma .
