Lives of the Most Notorious Highwaymen

Lives of the Most Notorious Highwaymen

John Heimbuch

...including especially the Marvelous Crimes and Machinations of Mr. Jonathan Wild & Jack Fowler, with Specific Attention given to the Tyburn Gallows and that Horrendous Fate which Befalls all Well-Known Thieves.

A horse, a pistol, a mask, and a name.

No question that theirs is an elegant crime.

In the summer of 1720, a savvy thief, a penniless writer, and a vengeful young lady are united by a botched robbery. When the writer publishes an account of their exploits, however, the unlikely trio quickly realize the benefits to be reaped from a dangerous reputation. Under the sultry and enigmatic influence of Jack Fowler, they all turn their hands to the highwayman's trade, carving their way across London society.

The King's Council, however, has lost its patience for crime. They offer a rich reward for any thief who will impeach their partners, and as the price on their heads continues to rise, the comrades who are lovers and the thieves who are friends find their world tumbling down around them.

SELECTED REVIEWS
"...the moment-to-moment thrills and pleasures carry the characters... The Lives of the Most Notorious Highwaymen is worth the trip, if just for the thrill of watching the crime and working out how, in the end, it will not pay for our brigands." - City Pages

"...Heimbuch weaved a yarn of elaborate schemes, broken promises, deception, murder, and even reverse-gender roles...The playwright is well-versed in the historical idiom and shares with us his pleasure at the force and the subtly of the language, making delightful use of the irony that the English, and the English language, are so adept at... This is theatre that is enthralled by the enchantment of language and the recollection and recounting of history." - Aisle Say Twin Cities
