Jack McBean In Beyond The Silk Road

Jack McBean is fourteen years old, likes computer games and the more violent passages of history, and loves historical computer games.

A freak accident causes a corrupted computer game called “Fickle Destiny” to download into Jack’s head, and he finds himself catapulted into 13th Century England. There he befriends the young knight, Tarq, who has saved him from a premature, violent end, and, while recovering from an arrow wound, he works out he’s in a segment of the computer game called “Beyond the Silk Road”. Having already been wounded, Jack knows that game or no game, a painful death is a very real possibility. To exit from the game he’ll have to complete some sort of quest, but as yet he doesn’t know what it is.

The quest turns out to be the recovery of Tarq’s family estates from a fearsome, villainous baron, which entails a long trip to the east to enlist the help of Tarq’s crusader elder brother. Jack and Tarq’s journey covers Europe, North Africa, Asia Minor and Central Asia – beyond the Silk Road – with many adventures en-route. Thanks to a bizarre chain of events, it’s Jack himself who faces the final showdown with the evil baron, but will the skills he has learned on his trip be enough to help him win?

Beyond the Silk Road was only the first segment of the rogue computer game. On his return to the Twenty-First Century Jack realises other historical adventures remain a distinct possibility...
