Heidi's tale (Forgotten stories)

Heidi's tale (Forgotten stories)

Rachel Field
0/5 ( ratings)
This is a nearly forgotten story, hitherto passed on by the spoken word, and now put in print in memory of those who told it.
Heidi was from Austria. She was married to a man called Josef, from Poland, but all the other Poles around thought he was a German pretending to be a Pole. Heidi had an English friend called Marion visiting her one day. “I am fed up of this life as a single woman” Marion said to Heidi. Josef overheard her. “We fix that real easy.” Josef said to Marion. “Come - with me – get on my motor-bike”. ‘To cut a long story short’ - Marion was in the mood for a bit of adventure so took up the offer. Josef took her to a remote construction site high on the Yorkshire moors where an army of men was doing the hardest of work, where, far from any habitation they were exposed to the elements every day. Many of the men were former Polish soldiers trapped in England by politics after WW2. Josef knew the place and the men well and believed that the unmarried ones were much in need of a wife. Being a fixer by inclination he acted as matchmaker and found Marion the man who was to become her husband.
