Written as a fable, this short book aims to ram home an important message about our lifestyle choices and how they can have a serious impact on our lives. It's written to entertain, the lesson woven into the story.
The tale is inspired by an urban gull's real-life exploits that made him a local celebrity, a YouTube hit and a target for a real-life killer.
Story Synopsis
Urban gulls are increasingly making the city their permanent home, settling for the comfort and security that year-round city living provides, unaware that there is a killer in their midst, a killer every bit as dangerous as a predator in the wild.
Sam is one such urban gull, a gull who has made his home on a factory roof in a Scottish city. His fondness for cheesy snacks and taking them from shop shelves without leaving payment amuses the locals. He becomes a minor celebrity when his shoplifting antics appear on local news bulletins, and subsequently receives worldwide attention after his shenanigans go viral. But there are those who don't see the funny side, those who see Sam as a pest, those who seek to introduce their own form of pest control through a licence to kill.
For all the apparent benefits, Sam begins to realise that the life of an urban gull wasn't all it was cracked up to be, especially when you're up against a killer you can't even see. He dreams of feasting on fresh sardines and wild berries on the Mediterranean coastline just like his parents used to do. However, the winter migration had ceased long ago. Sam needs to get in shape before he's ready for a long flight. He also needs to learn the foraging skills needed to survive in the wild. While committed to his task, he's well aware that no other gull in the colony had managed to escape the city.
* This is a novella 19000 words in length or approximately 80 pages long in paperback.
