A getaway driver gets in over his head when a heist goes terribly wrong and he decides to take off with the loot. Now he needs to get his girlfriend and baby-to-be out of town before the last remaining crew member can find them. Unfortunately, for Clarke, there are other forces at work hunting them down as well. His ordeal started long before he can even remember and now his past demons are in the flesh and they want their due. This one is a trip from Gary McMahon. A good quick read with element...
A robbery goes south and the getaway driver winds up with the money. Now, the planner is on his tail and his only friend has been butchered. Can he and his pregnant girlfriend get out of town with the money before the reaper in the dark claims his prey?I got this from DarkFuse via Netgalley.Reaping the Dark feels like a crime book for most of the story, only the people getting ripped off are a cult and they send something supernatural after the crooks for retribution. Or do they?Like a few of Da...
This is my third Gary McMahon book and it had a lot to live up to. Could this be just as good as Nightsiders and Rough Cut. The answer is Yes!Mr McMahon's books are excellent british horror. The characters, situations and horror elements all embrace a britishness which I love to read. Of course, even if they were not british horror I would still love them. It's just great to see a homegrown horror story to rival all those non-british stories I read. This book reads like Drive to begin with. Then
This novella from Gary McMahon exceeded my own expectations, and I consider myself to be quite a fan of his writing! What starts out as a robbery gone wrong, quickly becomes a fast and furious trip into the depths of evil and the supernatural. Our main character, "Driver Z", realizes what means more to him than anything--but it's near impossible to tell if anything is what it seems in this gripping novella of terror and dark occult practices.Intensely gripping tale that NEVER lets up; you'll fin...
This was an eArc from Netgalley.Fasten your seatbelt or risk going through the windshield when the wheels come off in this fast paced example of noir/supernatural thriller, because there's Hell to pay when a heist goes horribly wrong and the Devil always gets his due.
Clarke is the driver, the getaway driver for robberies. The last job goes bad and Clarke has to get Martha, his pregnant girlfriend, out of town as soon as possible. Before his plan can get in motion, Martha is taken and Clarke is left with no choice but to confront his unknown foes and face his demons as his forgotten past catches up to him.Darkness is coming.Gary tells a good story, but sometimes I don't think I "get" his vague horrors. His monsters are not always easily visualized and I have a...
A very enjoyable read. An effective mix of noir and horror.
"Reaping the Dark" is the story of a professional getaway driver who gets on the wrong side of some bad people after a job on which he is contracted to drive goes horribly awry. This story had me with the criminal element. The characters are well written and were an engaging element in the story. The early hint at the occult was intriguing. You knew it had to come into play in a bigger and hopefully badder way later. But, when it finally does, the story lost me. The originality of the balance of
Another great novella from Darkfuse. I read this book in one sitting and I think most people will do the same.I really enjoy supernatural noir stories. I enjoyed McMahon’s The Nightsiders last year and William Meikle’s Broken Sigil was another fine example earlier this year.I once read that a New York purse-snatcher a few years ago managed to grab a purse from an elderly lady, tossing her to the ground in the process and injuring her. The article stated that the victim turned out to be a relativ...
The chilling Nightsiders certainly put Gary McMahon on my radar and Reaping the Dark, while not quite making the same impression was certainly an intriguing read. Initially touching on the Occult and the supernatural, we then shift over to a robbery gone wrong and Clarke, the getaway driver who suddenly finds himself left with a whole lot of money. He immediately makes plans to leave town, with only his pregnant girlfriend to worry about, there’s one friend to see and then they’re gone, but plan...
Reaping the Dark is the first work by Gary McMahon that I have read, and I am very favorably impressed. The story about a freelance getaway driver has elements of both a suspense thriller and a supernatural horror story. Clarke, or Driver Z as he is professionally known, is hired as the getaway driver for a huge heist that goes terribly wrong. Only he survives with the money, and he makes a plan with his pregnant girlfriend to flee the area a start live anew. Unfortunately, the master criminal b...
Like a Tom Piccirilli crime book with an occult twist, REAPING THE DARK is a must read for dark fiction fans. I loved it.
I have many of Gary's books but this was only the second book by him I have read. The first being Nightsiders which I enjoyed a lot. I need to read more of Gary's books this year. This novella from DarkFuse was a very good quick read. The main character in the story is Clarke, a getaway driver known as Driver Z. While on a job the heist goes bad when leaving the building and people get shot by this large man in a over coat. The money gets thrown in the back of the car by a guy named McKensie, bu...
Another solid novella from Gazza Mac. It's a character-based piece, with an interesting lead. Clarke's reluctance to fully engaged in life is reflected in his "career" choice of crime driver, the getaway guy. The prose makes many nice offhand allusions to his decidedly mechanic approach to existence. The whole thing starts as a crime drama, with some well-observed material and dialogue (I particularly liked the tender scene with Oates) before drifting off into some weird occult stuff, with an ef...
4.5*Clarke is driver Z and drives the getaway car in a botched robbery where he thinks no one makes it out alive apart from him. He plans to make off with the money and create a better future for his pregnant girlfriend and their future family. As he prepares to leave someone decides they want the money back and takes his most precious possession from him to bargain with. The exchange does not go as planned. This dark little tale was a perfect quick read which established it's main characters wel...
Book Review originally published here: http://www.iheartreading.net/reviews/...In Reaping the Dark, he’s known as Driver Z, but his real name is Clarke. He’s a getaway driver for robberies, and knows better than anyone how to handle criminals. But when a robbery goes wrong, and he gets the cash, and only one of the robbers survive, Clarke starts dreaming of a new life. Away from crime. A new beginning for himself, his girlfriend, and their unborn baby. But things don’t work out that way. Because
Clarke, our eponymous hero and getaway driver, owes more than a little to the likes of Ryan Gosling in Drive and the mighty Jason Statham in The Transporter. Like his celluloid forebears, he’s the consummate professional, all about getting the job done at any cost. He’s never let himself be bogged down by any sort of obligation or familial ties. Tough as old boots and always ready for action, he could easily be dismissed as a bit of a two-dimensional action hero, but Clarke is far more than that...
A solid opening line, "Magic, like nature, will always find a way."A crime story with a supernatural twist, in the hands of a skilled writer, results in an entertaining novella, beginning to end.Reaping the Dark finds Clarke, a getaway driver known in the criminal world as Driver Z, the recipient of a large sum of money as the result of a heist that didn't quite go as expected. The next morning the TV news put it this way, "Three men were killed last night in what seems to be a gangland shooting
‘Nobody is interested in the driver until it’s time to get away’. Clarke, the getaway driver in question (known to his peers as Driver Z), was orphaned at an early age and mentored by Oakes, who now acts as his go-between. Carving out a “walk away quickly” lifestyle with his pregnant girlfriend Martha, who shares his views - virtually everything in their flat is rented - he dreams of becoming a stuntman, realising that his life must change when he becomes a father. His latest job, a drugs raid t...
The latest novella from the pen of Gary McMahon starts off as a crime caper with more than a hint of films such as 'Drive' and 'Heat' before taking a hard turn into Denis Wheatley territory in a claustrophobic and tense second half in which the story really finds top gear.Reaping the Dark is the story of Clarke, a getaway driver who calls himself Driver Z and has a set of rules that he doesn't so much operate by as live his life to, whose latest job has just gone tits up leaving bodies in his wa...
