As a gay man in Iran, Bilal is in constant danger of arrest. His father, a mullah, wants to get him married as quickly as possible and has picked out a bride, a prospect that horrifies Bilal. He joins some friends who are going to Turkey, leaving his family and studies behind. On the bus he meets a handsome Canadian, François. They share an interest in history and enjoy visiting ancient sites when the bus stops along the way. In Ankara, Bilal and François spend a romantic evening together, but François has to return to Canada suddenly, and Bilal rejoins his friends.In Turkey they are illegal migrants, faced with the problem of survival. They get involved with disreputable characters, and Bilal ends up working in a high class gay spa, saving money to cross illegally to Europe. A first attempt ends in disaster, and Bilal must work for another year before making another attempt. He joins a group of migrants trying to get to a Greek island, and they must run the gauntlet of unscrupulous traffickers and a dangerous sea crossing.
