A short inspiring, unnerving novel set in occupied Normandy. Alyd, a young farm child unwittingly has the most important piece of information about an Allied reconnaissance airplane crash. Therefore she has no reason not to tell the wrong people. Meanwhile, the one crash survivor has left the scene in spite of dire need for help, but with reasons to believe in both his commanders and in God's guidance. Commandant Schorsch is both civil and awful in his attempt to find the information he wants, driving Alyd's mother to sickness. But Daniel has one huge card left to play in the drama of the village of Brege, and when Alyd learns what happened a few years later, she scrapes together money to honor Daniel.
