The Infinite Life Sutra & The Lotus Sutra

F. Max Müller
4/5 ( ratings)
THE INFINITE LIFE SUTRA
The sutra describes in great detail Sukhavati and its inhabitants, and how they are able to attain rebirth there. The text also provides a detailed account of the various levels and beings in the Mahayana Buddhist cosmology. The sutra also contains the forty-eight vows of Amitabha Buddha to save all sentient beings. The eighteenth vow is among the most important as it forms a basic tenet of the Pure Land school.

THE LOTUS SUTRA
One of the most popular and influential Mahayana sutras. This sutra is known for its extensive instruction on the concept and usage of skillful means – , the seventh paramita or perfection of a Bodhisattva – mostly in the form of parables. It is also one of the first sutras to use the term Mahayana, or "Great Vehicle", Buddhism.
