The problems of Mark Hartmann, a consultant pathologist, has a gambling problem, one that is starting to threaten his marriage to a successful barrister and his comfortable lifestyle. When he has to perform an autopsy on Millicent Sweet, a 22-year-old laboratory assistant who has died of cancer, he recognises that his findings are odd but, before he can discuss the case with colleagues, he attends an academic meeting in Scotland, where he ends up sleeping with one of the sales reps. This gives an unscrupulous pharmaceutical company an opportunity to blackmail him into falsifying his report on Millicent Sweet's death.
But they are not the only people interested in Millicent Sweet’s odd demise. Her father, convinced his daughter's death is due to negligence by her employers , asks lawyer Helena Flemming to look into the case. She and her partner, forensic pathologist John Eisenmenger, soon discover the results of Hartmann's original post mortem examination, and the attempt to hide it. But the stakes are very high, and those who do not want the truth to be found out are ruthless...
