simply garden small!: Creative food-growing systems for our changing world.

simply garden small!: Creative food-growing systems for our changing world.

Yvonne Scott
0/5 ( ratings)
In a world of plenty why is there hunger? And why is the so-called “humanitarian aide system” of giving food commodities to hungry people not ending the crisis of malnutrition? These questions puzzled healthy food access consultant, hunger activist, writer, former homestead organic farmer, community garden mentor, and AmericorpsVISTA volunteer, Yvonne Scott, for a very long time. Her search for answers connected her with some very creative groups and individuals who also believe that hunger is unacceptable. In this small, easy to use manual, Scott shares with us what she calls “food growing ” combining simple growing methods and containers from available materials with the best food options to reverse “hidden hunger” or micronutrient depletion. “Anyone can garden,” she says, “anywhere,” and this book will provide the reader with colorful examples--whether you live in South Africa, a flood zone, or the middle of Kansas. A key component of this book is information on why hunger exists, the two types of hunger, an understanding of micronutrient deficiency and how to bring critical micronutrients back into the diet. Also included are simple fertilizer recipes, a no-turning compost system, how to save seeds, healthy recipes and much more. This manual could become an important tool in the anti-hunger toolbox for teachers, health care workers, community activists, NGO volunteers, anyone working with food-insecure populations or anyone interested in regaining control over the source of their food and improving their diet.
