Not the strongest issue. I found a few stories to be a bit flat and over-long. But "The Mushroom Hunter", "Aguanile", and "Amputee" are certainly worth a read
Glimmer Train seems to always please overall, and usually I feel like an issue has a good mixture of types of stories. What strikes me about this issue in particular however is how I have become simply enraptured by the characters that populate those short stories I enjoyed the most. Though facing conflict, they are not dysfunctional, in fact the stories seem to speak to me about how their characters are managing to still stay functional and captivating despite their varied situations and concer...
Fantastic collection.
I eagerly await my quarterly issue of Glimmer Train. The writing never disappoints and it's a great way to discover new voices. It's unfair to pick a favorite, but Austin Smith's story "The Ghost Man" will stay with me for a long, long time as will Matthew Ducker's "Middleweight".
Good selection of well written stories. I look forward to the next publication!
There were some VERY fine stories in this volume, my favorites being "Amputee" by David James Poissant, "Everyone is Waiting" by Soma Mei Sheng Frazier, and "The Ghost Man" by Austin Smith. The complex characters and narratives in each of these were stunning. There were also some stories in this issue I did not care for. Such is the norm for a collection of various short stories.
Solid, beautiful storytelling all-around. My favorites were 'Everyone Is Waiting' 'Suddenly, The Apocalypse' and 'Aguanile.' Also the interview with Ben Marcus -- I'm very intrigued by the concept of his latest novel 'The Flame Alphabet' and can't wait to wrap my heart-valves & brain-lobes around it..I must admit though...I am a bit weary of redneck-family-in-crisis-themed stories. Ugly children, ugly situations, ugly dogs, ugly sex & lots of trucks & firearms = depressing (not in a good way).
