Every summer the Strangers emerged from the ocean, to trade with the people of Covenant. In return for treasures of the land, they brought unthinkably ancient relics that bestowed strange powers—and there were those who claimed that traffic between the two races went far beyond that, to bizarre and blasphemous extremes.

But eventually fear ruled the day, and the inhuman Strangers were driven back into the cold Atlantic waters. In time they and the rituals that accompanied their arrival were forgotten by even the oldest townspeople.
