Employed as a tutor for a headstrong and troubled young girl, Lora Brown journeys to the Great Smoky Mountains to spend a challenging but enjoyable summer. At first it seems as though life at the lodge will be a lark; the mountain air is healthy and invigorating, and the members of the household are cordial and accommodating, particularly handsome young author Peter Riddell.

But there is a shadow hanging over Lora- and it is called Thunder Rock. Bearer of broken lives, this forbidding bluff dominates the landscape like an emblem of death. Soon Lora is pitched into a grisly whitewater of terror, peopled by barbarous backwoodsmen, ghastly spirits of the dead and....
