Excerpt:

It had been months since he talked to her and months since he had seen them, but they remained in his heart and on his mind. It was time, he knew, to let go. They weren’t coming back. They were in New York. By now they were acclimated into the life that they left. Shane needed to move on, and begin looking for a wife so he could have a family of his own.
Following that vein, he had a date that night with Jodie Wakins. They went to school together, and had dated some in high school, but never got too involved. He left for college, and she did her own thing and their friendship dissipated.
Yesterday he ran into her at Slim’s. He found out she had moved back to Spearfish after her own divorce. He was surprised to hear her say that, because she came from a family like his. Once your’re married you were married, forever. He didn’t have all the facts as to why she was divorced, but they agreed to catch up over dinner.
He should be happy. He should be looking forward to it, but he felt like he had unfinished business with Grace. The problem was he couldn’t bring himself to call her or visit her in New York. Besides they couldn’t do a long distance relationship. It wasn’t what either of them were looking for. Well, he knew for sure it wasn’t what he was looking for. He had no clue what she was looking for, so it went into the pile of unfinished business.
All he knew was she had to go and he let her. For a few days afterward, he thought about the saying “if you love someone set them free, if they come back they are yours; if they don’t then they never were yours to begin with”, it summed up his feelings on the matter. But it didn’t mean that the wanting went away.
The time that he had spent with Chase and Grace made him happy. He wanted more of it. He wanted it to continue everyday. But they were so far apart and there was no middle. He could never move to New York and she could never move to South Dakota.
Lost in his thoughts, he didn’t hear Justin’s approach until he heard his steps on the rocks. “Following me as usual little brother?”
“You know it.”
Justin reached the top and turned in a circle to take in the view. “It never changes. Imagine if there were smoke stacks or skyscrapers in the distance instead of the Black Hills?”
“Why would I want to imagine that?” Shane’s chest clenched at the mention of skyscrapers and his mind immediately displayed Grace and Chase. Would it ever fade?
“To better appreciate the beauty?”
“Justin, have you been drinking?”
“No, Shane I haven’t been drinking. So, why’d you come out here, something up? I figured after the divorce you’d be happier.”
“I am happy. I came out here to get some air.”
“I see.
