The Semiotics of (Im)Polite Address in Joachim Meichel's 1635 German Translation of Cenodoxus: Der Doctor von Paris

The Semiotics of (Im)Polite Address in Joachim Meichel's 1635 German Translation of Cenodoxus: Der Doctor von Paris

Paul Listen
4/5 ( ratings)
Jakob Bidermann’s Latin moral play Cenodoxus Der Doctor von Pariß was first performed in 1602 in Augsburg. The events in this Jesuitendrama are similar to those recounted in the legend of St. Bruno, whose own piety was due in part to his having witnessed the torments of a highly-respected 11th century Parisian doctor proclaiming his eternal damnation. Joachim Meichel’s remarkable German translation of the play appeared in 1635. This study uses discourse analysis and a text-linguistic approach to show how the complex interactions between characters are driven in part by a linguistic interplay of politeness, more specifically polite address. The semiotics of these verbal acts motivates the characters’ actions on mulitiple levels.

This ebook constitutes an academic paper the author presented at the Semiotic Circle of California at UC Berkeley in 1998.
