Police SWAT and Anti-Crime Team officers put on their game faces and gear up in their black BDUs to evict anarchists and militants occupying a nearby vacant building. The eclectic group of misfits is attempting to gain squatter status camping inside an old derelict slated for destruction. Because of a tense encounter with occupiers earlier that day, the SWAT commander orders Sgt. Paul Barnett to stand down, sit this one out, because by Department of Justice standards he may have a “conflict of interest,” an agenda involving revenge. Barnett’s squad of ACT officers will instead be lead by an acting sergeant. He chooses Allie Dixon, a well respected veteran, tough enough to direct the elite cadre, many of them ex-military.
Sgt. Barnett’s paternal instincts kick in as his squad leaves the safety of the precinct building, and so he follows at a discreet distance to the nearby warehouse. No sooner do the officers put on gas masks and enter the building than things turn chaotic and go very wrong—resulting in quick casualties. Without regard to his own safety, Sgt. Barnett steps into the breach and takes actions that could ultimately cost him his career—and much more. This modern noir SHORT STORY is likely the first in a series involving these main characters.
