Sophia Sandvoort, young and beautiful, lives with her eldrly husband Cornelis in Amsterdam. It is the early seventeenth century and the port bustles with commercial and artistic activity. Calvinism may have wiped Catholic richness from the town's churches, but its painters make up for it in a flurry of portraits and still lives. One such man is Jan van Loos, commissioned by Cornelis Sandvoort to paint himself and his lively young wife. But Jan no sooner sees Sophia than he falls in love with her and their shared passion forces them into a mad, daring plan. As commercial Amsterdam succumbs to tulip fever the young couple find themselves sucked into the vortex, with disastrous consequences.
