BORN: May 4, 1826 in Hartford, Connecticut.
DIED: April 7, 1900 in New York City, New York.

MOVEMENT: Hudson River School

INTERESTING FACTS:
§ At age 18, Church studied under Thomas Cole.
§ In 1848, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design, and promoted to Academician the following year.
§ Church regularly exhibited his paintings at the National Academy of Design, the American Art Union, and the Boston Art Club with Asher Durand, John Kensett, Thomas Cole and Jasper Cropsey.
The group came to be known as the Hudson River School.
§ In 1867, Church traveled extensively with his wife and children to Europe and the Middle East. Upon his return he painted large works of his travels.
§ In 1876, he became stricken with rheumatoid arthritis, which forced him to start painting with his left hand.

NOTABLE WORKS:
Heart of the Andes, Morning in the Tropics, New England Scenery, The Natural Bridge Virginia.
