The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: The Uncle Remus Translation

Ken Meyer Jr.
0/5 ( ratings)
This book is a translation of ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ into the Gullah-based dialect presented by Joel Chandler Harris. Joel Chandler Harris is one of America’s most treasured Southern writers. In Georgia in the late 1800s, Harris listened for many years to African American animal stories told by ‘Uncle’ George Terrell and others. Harris collected these stories and told them through the fictional narrator ‘Uncle Remus’.

Gullah is an English-based creole language containing many African words. Historical Gullah literary works vary in spelling and grammar. The public has adored the Gullah-based dialect presented by Joel Chandler Harris. Rudyard Kipling, Beatrix Potter and A. A. Milne were all influenced by Harris’ Uncle Remus tales and incorporated some of the Gullah words that he used into their works.

This book carries forward the poetic beauty and lilting style of the Gullah-based dialect as presented by Joel Chandler Harris for our appreciation and enjoyment. ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ is always a wonderful read. In this version, we have a new way of enjoying Robert Louis Stevenson’s treasured work.
