Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim remained for a long time in the shadow of the surrealists who were her friends. When, in 1936, she made the "fur teacup", however, she created an icon of twentieth-century art. The fame she gained for her "fur teacup"as well as Man Ray's photographs of her from the 1930s caused her to become an icon herself.
